SAFE Strategy

Strategic Priority Areas

SAFE's strategic approach focuses on five key areas of work, which together support the society's mission and long-term vision.

1. Membership and Scientific Community

SAFE is a member-driven society. Its effectiveness depends on building an engaged, diverse, and interdisciplinary membership spanning agriculture, food systems, energy, and One Health.
This priority focuses on:
  • Developing an inclusive global membership community
  • Encouraging participation across career stages and regions
  • Supporting collaboration, mentoring, and professional exchange
  • Recognising diverse forms of scientific, professional, and practical expertise

2. Dialogue, Evidence, and Policy-Relevant Engagement

SAFE seeks to support evidence-based dialogue on issues related to agriculture, food security, energy, and One Health at local, regional, and global levels.
This includes:
  • Facilitating informed discussion on emerging challenges and opportunities
  • Supporting the exchange of scientific and practical knowledge relevant to policy and practice
  • Engaging with partners and stakeholders to promote science-informed decision making

3. Research Culture and Interdisciplinary Practice

SAFE recognises that addressing complex sustainability challenges requires strong research culture and interdisciplinary practice.
This strategic area aims to:
  • Promote responsible, inclusive, and collaborative research practices
  • Encourage interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches
  • Support early-career researchers and emerging professionals
  • Foster openness, integrity, and respect within scientific and professional communities

4. Science, Education, and Society

SAFE is committed to strengthening connections between science, education, and society.
This priority focuses on:
  • Supporting education, training, and capacity-building initiatives
  • Encouraging public and professional engagement with One Health concepts
  • Promoting awareness of the interconnected nature of agriculture, food, energy, and health systems
  • Supporting accessible and inclusive knowledge exchange

5. Governance, Organisation, and Sustainability

The ability of SAFE to deliver its mission depends on transparent, effective, and accountable governance.
This strategic area includes:
  • Establishing clear governance structures and policies
  • Supporting ethical, transparent, and accountable decision making
  • Developing organisational systems that are fit for purpose as SAFE grows
  • Ensuring long-term sustainability aligned with the society's not-for-profit objectives

Cross-Cutting Strategic Principles

Across all areas of its work, SAFE is guided by the following principles:

Independence

SAFE is committed to intellectual independence and evidence-based perspectives that serve the public interest.

Partnership and Collaboration

SAFE values partnerships and convening as essential tools for interdisciplinary exchange and collective impact.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to SAFE's culture, governance, and future activities, recognising their importance in strengthening science and decision making.

International and Global Perspective

SAFE is conceived as an international society. Global perspectives and cross-border collaboration are embedded across its strategic priorities.

Looking Ahead

SAFE's strategic framework will evolve as the society develops its activities, partnerships, and capacity. As SAFE grows, this strategy will inform the design of future programs, initiatives, and collaborations that advance integrated One Health approaches for the benefit of society and the environment.
